LOUISIANA’S INCARCERATION RATE (2009)

1. Louisiana’s incarceration rate is number 1 in the nation (per capita).
2. One out of every 55 Louisiana residents is behind bars.
3. One in 26 Louisiana adults is under correctional control (on probation or parole).
4. It costs the state $39.75 to keep an offender behind bars for one day; that amounts to $14,508.75 per year (source The Pew Center For The States Study of 2007 U.S. Census Data and The Times 3/3/09).
5. Incarceration costs us $653.4 million in 2007-08. (source The Times, 3/7/09).
